Moloch was an ancient god who required child sacrifices. He was also the name of the factory that ate its workers in the silent film Metropolis, and Alen Ginsburg referred to him as the spirit of the age.
The haiku is about the idea of a "data driven" education as opposed to an education based on relationships and community and instilling citizenship and survival skills. Our schools eat children. It stunts their development instead of fostering it.
It's been a long time since you wrote this, but it seems even more true today. On one hand children should be familiarized with today's technology and of course schools need to utilize it in educating them, but on the other it seems like this technology is enveloping our lives faster than we realize.
